Is Playoff Baseball a Possibility for the Phillies?

On the way to being competitive, we all knew it would only be a matter of time before the Phillies opened up their wallets. But did they open it up on the right guy at the right time? Does Jake Arrieta make them an instant contender in the National League?

In a move to show they are ready to compete for a second title, the Eagles pulled off a stunner. With the addition of Michael Bennett, are they better than last year? Does bringing in another CB in Worley signal another move on the horizon?

Tiger Woods showed the poise of a Champion once again as he sunk a 44 foot putt on the way to a 2nd place finish. Is he back? Is there another athlete who is as powerful in society as Tiger? Is he the favorite to win the Masters?

With the recent trades of Jarvis Landry and Tyrod Taylor, is Cleveland now a Fantasy safe haven? With the trio of Taylor, Gordon, and Landry teams will finally have to respect the offense. Will the Browns finally play meaningful football this year?

March Madness is here and the brackets are ready to be busted. How many pools do you play? With all the famous memoires of the NCAA Tourney, what do you remember best? What teams, players and coaches signify your upbringing?

NFL Championship Weekend…Road to Arizona Continues

The stage is set and ready for Prime Time. The road to the Superbowl continues on Sunday when arguably 4 of the Top 5 quarterbacks will be on display for the entire world to watch. Last weekend we seen an underdog in the Ravens squander a game away and possibly a true legend of the game in Manning take his last NFL snap. Superman was alive for one-quarter, but an evil enemy named Chancellor proved to be too strong for his punch. Lastly, we seen America’s team lose by a bobble and a courageous athlete lead his Pack to victory who could barely even give a discount double-check to his opposition. I am sure this weekend will leave a lasting impression on us all and prove to be just as entertaining.

Packers at Seahawks

One week after a gutsy performance by Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers travel to Seattle to take on the Seattle Seahawks and the Legion of Boom. We all know about the calf, but despite the injury, Rodgers completed 24 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns against Dallas. The running game proved to be efficient enough to keep some pressure of the QB with Eddie Lacy running for over 100 yards on 19 carries. It was also nice to see the other receivers not named Jordy (Cobb and Adams) step up and eclipse the 100 yard receiving mark.

The Seahawks meanwhile were exactly who we thought they were in a 31-17 defeat of the Carolina Panthers. Russell Wilson delighted fans all over the football world as he showed why he is one of the most electric and top QB’s in the league as he passed for three touchdowns on 15 completions. The Legion of Boom did their job as they pressured Cam Newton all game forcing him into two interceptions and erratic throws most of the day. Seattle sits at 7-1 at home including a 36-16 victory over the Packers in Week 1 and has been playing at level that may be even higher than that of last year. Look for the Seahawks to throw the heavy blitz book at Rogers forcing him to put pressure on the calf trying to be the mobile QB he can be when healthy. Green Bay is a formidable opponent, but under these circumstances I think they will come up short.

Prediction: Packers 17, Seahawks 23

Colts at Patriots

The Ravens came out throwing knockout punches from the gate, but didn’t have the stamina to preserve a win. Bill Belichick put the game into the hands of his HOF Quarterback in the 2nd Half and the rest is history.  This week the Patriots welcome Andrew Luck and the Colts into their house of Gold, as they square off into a battle for supremacy in the AFC. The Patriots have won the last five meetings between these teams by an average of 18 points. The Patriots ran all over the Colts back in Week 11 in Indianapolis. I am sure everyone remembers the Jonas Grey game that haunted fantasy players all around the world. Look for Tom Brady to continue to use his offensive vision and mighty arm to wear down the Indianapolis defense and open up the field.

On the flipside, Andrew Luck leads the league’s top ranked pass attack in the regular season into Gillette in the hopes of earning a trip to the big dance. The Colts have been slowly trying to bring their run game back from the depths of the unknown with the emergence of Dan Herron. Herron took over for an overvalued T-Rich and has proved to be a spark. He has an incredible 18 catches so far this post-season which gives this offense yet another weapon in the passing game for the Patriots to defend against. Indianapolis will look downfield to TY Hilton whenever they can and should find some opportunities if the taller Browner is lined up opposite against the smaller quicker Hilton.

I think this is the game out of the 2 that has a chance to keep us guessing. These are two exciting teams and should put up a decent amount of points. Chuck Pagano has really proved himself to be an incredible gameday coach and doesn’t get anywhere near the respect he deserves. I see this game being decided late with only a touchdown as separation. Both teams will go to their air attacks early and often. Despite the Colts improved defense and the Patriots strong secondary, I think this game will have so many highlights they may need to add another 5 minute segment on Sportscenter to be able to see them all.

Prediction: Colts 31, Patriots 38

NFL Divisional Playoff Analysis

Well it’s almost time for another round of NFL Playoffs and a weekend that should leave us in a pool of excitement. The level of talent left in these 4 games should live up to their reputation and should not disappoint. If playing against some stiff competition wasn’t enough, Mother Nature has voiced her displeasure for the NFL Playoffs by sticking all 4 games into a pattern of frigid temperatures and bone-crushing wind chills cold enough to make an Eskimo shiver. This weekend is definitely going to separate the men from the boys, helping the crowd bring back the forever loved Pedro Martinez chants of, “Who’s your Daddy.” Below is my attempt to preview and pick the winners for all four games.

Ravens at Patriots

How many people expected the Ravens to go into Pittsburgh and knock out the Steelers in front of their home crowd? Well that is exactly what they did and now have their sights set on knocking the arrogance out of New England’s mouth. New England has a 12-3 playoff record at home during the Belichick/Brady regime, but 2 out of those 3 loses came from the Ravens. The Ravens seem to have found something to be able to stop Tom Brady’s air attack by constant pressure up the middle making him make bad decisions. We all know what happens to Tom when he doesn’t get his way. He acts like a spoiled little kid on Christmas morning that cries because he didn’t get an Xbox. However, if that pressure doesn’t get through, Mr. Brady will be slicing up the Baltimore defense quicker than a junkie that hasn’t made a sponsor meeting in over a year. It will not be pretty for the 24th ranked defense allowing just under 250yds a game and a total of 22 touchdowns. Here are some more interesting keys to the game:

• Joe Flacco has more Playoff wins on the road (7) than any other quarterback in NFL history

• Flacco (2) and Brady (1) in their 3 head to head playoff matchups

• Forsett has been slowing down in the 2nd half of the season and was held to only 36 yards last week. Patriots allowed 104.3 rushing yards a game, but only 6 TD’s during the regular season.

• Julian Edelman has made Wes Welker an afterthought in the slot. 92 catches this year, 105 last years. Enough said!

• There will be so much trash being thrown around on the field by Revis and Smith that New England had to make Sunday a collection day this week.

Prediction: Ravens 28, Patriots 24

Panthers at Seahawks

It’s Superman versus the Legion of Boom. Unfortunately, in this fairy tale, the Seattle Seahawks are Cam Newton’s kryptonite. Did the Panthers start the season off well? No. Did they perform well down the stretch? Yes they did. However, if the Panthers thought the Cardinals defense was a tough nut to crack, they’ll be in for a rude awakening here in the divisional round when they head to Seattle to play against the defending Super Bowl Champions. The Seattle defense has kicked their engine into 4 wheel drive and has been crushing any terrain that gets in their way. Richard Sherman is showing why he was on the Madden cover and why he is the best cornerback in the game. I have to be honest; I have as much confidence in Carolina putting up a fight in this game as I have in Barak Obama turning our country around. Here are a few tidbits from this game below.

• Carolina’s 2 top receivers, Olsen and Benjamin, had a total of seven catches for 70 yards and no scores last weekend

• Seahawks conceded an average of just 153 passing yards per game, but did give 11 TD’s to opposing TE’s which was 3rd most in the league.

• Jonathan Stewart has been hot…He’s averaged close to 100 yds per game over his last 6…

• Russell Wilson led all QB’s this season with 849 rushing yards and protected the ball with only 7 INT’s

• Marshawn Lynch has touched the ball over 1,300 times over the past 4 seasons…He has been banged up a little bit this year, but this is the playoffs and the beast is about to be unleashed.

Prediction: Seahawks 27, Panthers 13

Cowboys at Packers

This is the matchup in the NFC everyone is looking forward to because of the many question marks surrounding it. Will Tony Romo continue his MVP play or will he falter in the confines of the cold weather? Will Aaron Rodgers be able play through the pain and put on a show like only he can do? Either way you toss it; this should be a great game between two offensive powerhouses. These 2 storied franchises haven’t played in over 50 years in the playoffs. I think Dallas has the upper hand in the trenches, but we have seen in some games where their line has disappeared. Green Bay on the other hand takes games off on defense on occasion. However, Morgan Burnett will be patrolling the field looking for a star to catch and leaving Dez and Terrence to think about their next step. I really think this game will come down to who scores last. Here are some tidbits from this game below:

• Cowboys are undefeated on the road (8-0)

• Weather can always be an issue in Green Bay especially this late in the year

• Cowboys ranked 2nd in rushing this year and will look to control the game with Murray

• Eddie Lacy will have to step up again with Rodger being limited

• Clay Matthews has led the run stopping surge since he took over the Middle.

Prediction: Packers 34, Cowboys 31

Colts at Broncos

In a chess match between student and teacher, Andrew Luck brings his Colts to Denver to battle Peyton and his Broncos. While Peyton Manning is the general of the NFL, Andrew Luck is leaving his stamp on the NFL as the next guy in line to carry that torch. The Colts took care of business against the Bengals last week, who were frauds and a poor excuse for a playoff team. They did it mainly through the air, which is the complete opposite of the counterpart. The Denver Broncos have taken a new identity over the last few weeks and are starting the run the ball behind C.J. Anderson. This guy has been a gem averaging over 80+ yards in the last 6 games right off the practice squad and has afforded Peyton to rest up over the last few weeks and get ready to explode in the playoffs. Here are some tidbits below from this game:

• C.J. Anderson has 80+ rushing yards six times and scored a total of 10 touchdowns over the last 6 games. • Peyton Manning looks slow and out of sync… In his last four games, Manning has thrown twice as many interceptions as touchdowns while dealing with injuries and illness.

• Luck has thrown for 360 YDS/G in his four playoff starts. The emergence of RB Dan Herron was a major factor in their victory over the Bengals as he had 141 total yards along with a rushing touchdown

Predictions: Broncos 31, Colts 27

*****All points based on CBS Sports PPR Scoring system…

Things we have learned from Week 12……..

  • The Miami Dolphins are looking like they are for real and have built up a real  nice offensive system. One of their centerpieces is becoming rookie WR Jarvis Landry. He was one of  my prime PPR pickup suggestions a few weeks back and is starting pay dividends. His since week 9…24 rec, 205 yds, & 4 TD’s….These are excellent WR2 numbers!

  • Odell Beckham Jr. took the world of social media by storm with his amazing one handed catch. The O’Dog is starting to show why he was heralded coming out of college and is starting to make the teams who passed on him second guessing. Over the last 4 weeks he has compiled a stat line of 41 rec, 503 yds, & 2 TD’s..This guy is for real!

  • Can we finally put the rest the notion of Trent Richardson ever being a number one option. The teams consistently floats the idea that T-Rich is their guy, but their actions never convey the same message. This week it was rookie RB Dan “Boom” Herron who took the lion share of the carries and actually looked like an established offensive player. He out carried T- Rich 17/13 and looks to offer a good RB2 potential for the rest of the year.

  • Coming into this year, this rookie WR class was being hyped as one, if not, the best ever. They sure have not disappointed. Over the last 3 weeks they have really turned it on as Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr., Jordan Matthews, Jarvis Landry, and Kelvin Benjamin all are in the Top 20.

Emmanuel Sanders has surpassed 100 yards in 7 of 11 games this year. He has been a fantasy STUD this year and well worth the 6th/7th rounds selection in the preseason drafts…..Justin Forsett looks like the second coming of MJD in his prime. Thank god for him Ray Rice is a wife beater….RGIII looks like he couldn’t beat out Ryan Leaf for a starting gig right now…..Matt Stafford still looks as lost as a blind man trying to cross an interstate when he plays a tough defense……Isaiah Crowell has shown why it was easy to let Ben Tate go. He shredded the Atlanta Falcons for 2 TD and showed he has more moves then a sober James Brown…Derek Carr is looking like he may actually be a relevant QB for the Raiders…….Josh Gordon is back and went from burning weed to burning defenders…..Tennessee is so bad right now, they look like they could get beat by a division III school….Does anyone notice that recycled coaches do not work, ala Lovie Smith…….The Cincinnati Bengals are 7-3-1 and are as entertaining as  a Barack Obama news conference……Demaryius Thomas catches TD’s like a Vegas prostitute catches an STD….Eddie Lacy continues to play at a higher level than his preseason predictions….John Brown is being compared to Marvin Harrison, Wow…..Don’t look now, but Seattle is starting to roll…Could we be seeing a New England vs. Seattle Super Bowl?

Defense Wins Championships!

As the day after the Super Bowl is upon us, it should definitely be a wakeup call for the Philadelphia Eagles organization and its defensive mindset. The Seattle Seahawks did what a lot of people said they would not be able to do, which is stop Peyton Manning and his arsenal of weapons. The Denver Broncos came into this game as the number one offense in the NFL, racking up records and milestones all throughout the year. Unfortunately, they stepped into a matchup with the number one defense in the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks. There was a lot of talk that much of Seattle’s success was predicated by their home field crowds causing commotion and deafening collaboration, but after last night, it shows that they are just that darn good!

One of the biggest sound alerts that should be sent to the Eagles franchise from this game is that even though they may have a prolific offense, Defense wins championships. As I stated in my previous article, the priority in this offseason should start and end with the defense side of the ball. Just think for a second, how many more wins we could have had last year if we were able to stop the opposing teams at critical points of the game. How many 3rd and 1’s did we fail to stop? How many 2nd and 3’s went for 20+ yards? There are so many scenarios we can all play out in regards to our defense last year to show how much we need to improve. Obviously, we did play well with what we had in regards to talent, which is why we need to focus on playmakers this offseason, not just an average, mid tier, second stringer. In my opinion, we need a pass rusher who can be dominant, a safety who can make plays, and corner who can lock down the opposing teams’ number one receiver. I know that’s a wish list that many teams may have, but we have the financial flexibility and national likeness to get it done.

Looking at this game under a microscope, you can see how the plan of the Seahawks was to make Peyton rush, which would make his thought process unbalanced. This led to careless throws into forced coverage and timing issues that disrupts every phase of his game. It almost is equivalent to the game plan the Cowboys had on Nick Foles, which should serve as a compliment to Foles and a hint to how to unravel an offensive powerhouse, such as the Eagles. If you look at last year’s Super Bowl winner, the Baltimore Ravens, they too possessed the game changing defense that was needed to, not only stop important drives throughout the game, but to solidify the balanced game plan that had put into place. The Philadelphia Eagles are on a way to continued success, but they will constantly come up short if they do not take notice of the ever growing emphasis of assembling a defense that not only wins games, but has the ability to win Championships, something this town is craving for more than an earlier Spring!!!!
