Who are Your Top 5 Wide Recievers in the NFL?

heatratiocrop

In what should be a very active offseason, the Eagles have a lot of decisions to make. Who gets paid, cut, and/or allowed to walk. What is your biggest concern? On the other side of the parking lot, the Phillies are looking to build a winner too. Do they sign a top of the rotation guy named Jake?

How about the NBA? Were the Michael Jordan years the best the league has ever seen? Have people lost a respect for the game based on the play? Would you want or allow the Eagles to sign Dez Bryant if he gets cut? Is Kennan Allen the best WR in the NFL? If so, where does Larry Fitz grade out?

Lastly, Fantasy Baseball is right around the corner and 2 Top Sluggers have new homes. Who is the better play, Hosmer or Martinez?  There is so much packed into 1 hour!

The Heat Ratio (@theheatratio) brings a set of unique views and opinions each week to focus on all the top sports stories from the news. Listen in as Tony (@TCutillo23) says put Larry Fitz in his Top 3 for WRs while John (@PGHJohn36) says he belongs after the Top 5. From a Classic Tony rant to a Dez Bryant option, it’s all here just waiting for your take….

Complete “Playoff” Fantasy Football Rankings Unleashed

As we gear up for the first playoff game on Saturday, here are my complete Playoff Ranking for Each Position. There are many variables that go into these rankings such as the projected number of games, matchups, offense styles, and of course Vegas Odds. One thing to always remember when picking players based on wins and loses, the Line always tells you something!

QB

  1. Russell Wilson
  2. Tom Brady
  3. Aaron Rodgers
  4. Tony Romo
  5. Peyton Manning
  6. Andrew Luck
  7. Ben Roethlisberger
  8. Matt Stafford
  9. Cam Newton
  10. Joe Flacco
  11. Andy Dalton

RB

  1. DeMarco Murray
  2. C.J. Anderson
  3. Marshawn Lynch
  4. Eddie Lacy
  5. LeGarrette Blount
  6. Jeremy Hill
  7. Le’Veon Bell (Injury Factor)
  8. Justin Forsett
  9. Dan Herron
  10. Jonathan Stewart
  11. Joique Bell

WR

  1. Dez Bryant
  2. Jordy Nelson
  3. Antonio Brown
  4. T.Y. Hilton
  5. Demaryius Thomas
  6. Brandon LaFell
  7. Emmanuel Sanders
  8. Randall Cobb
  9. Julian Edelman
  10. Calvin Johnson
  11. Doug Baldwin
  12. Torrey Smith
  13. A.J. Green
  14. Kelvin Benjamin

These are the only rankings that I am supplying based on the fact that there are very few TE’s to choose from and K/DEF is your last priority. Now remember, when looking at these players, matchups are key. Not everyone can get past the first round, but as long as you can limit the number of early exits you should be okay.

Things we have learned from Week 15……..

  • Jeremy Hill’s production as the Bengals’ starter has been a quick progression that has pushed full steam ahead. Coming right out of training camp, everyone was on the Giovani Bernard bandwagon and drafting him as high as the 2nd round. Well, injuries are always an opportunity for backups to shine, which is exactly what Hill did as the starter. Hill is a true workhorse back and is averaging a flashy 4.95 ypc. He has taken hold of the job and will not be relinquishing it any time soon.
  •  Odell Beckham is a BEAST! Beckham  has been destroying defenses on a week to week basis. This past week it was the Washington Redskins on his list and he didn’t disappoint. He crushed Jim Haslett’s defense for 12 catches, 143 yards and 3 touchdowns, bringing his season line to 71/972/9 … in 10 games. Beckham is averaging 9 catches for 124 yards since replacing Victor Cruz in the starting lineup, and has cleared 90 yards 7-of-7 times. He has 61 catches, which is the most ever for a rookie in a seven-game span. His starting averages extrapolate to 139/1,979/14 for a full season. WOW!!!!!That yardage total would be the most all time.
  •  Johnny Manziel’s debut as a starter did not go as planned. The Browns ran an NFL season-low 38 offensive plays in a 30-0 loss Sunday to the Cincinnati Bengals, with Manziel throwing for just 80 yards and two interceptions. Manziel got minimal help from the rest of the offense and looked indecisive making throws down-field. The Browns’ offense was on the field for less than 21 minutes Sunday. He will learn real quick that the CB’s in the NFL are alot more explosive than that of the NCAA..

Drew Brees rose back to elite status with a 300+ and 3 TD performance….Jay Cutler looks about as reliable as a deadbeat Dad who hasn’t paid child support in over 10 years….The Chicago O-Line is revolving faster than then the entrance door at Toys R Us during the Holiday Season….Harry Douglas looks to be a more than adequate replacement for Julio Jones while he is out….Aaron Rodgers showed he is human…Jordy Nelson must have been soaking his fingertips in 5W-30 since he could catch a cold in Buffalo…Drew Stanton got knocked out and his replacement, Ryan Lindley reminded us why he is Ryan Lindley.….The Cincinnati Bengals were throwing around more money signs than Pac Man Jones at the strip club…..There has been an APB put out for Peyton Manning and Emmanuel Sanders. Has anyone seen them at a bus stop anywhere?….Mark Sanchez proved why the NY Jets let him go and told him he needed to stick to visits to the Playboy Mansion. This is the one place he may be able to HIT on open target!!!!!!!!!!

*****All points based on CBS Sports PPR Scoring system…

Things we have learned from Week 12……..

  • The Miami Dolphins are looking like they are for real and have built up a real  nice offensive system. One of their centerpieces is becoming rookie WR Jarvis Landry. He was one of  my prime PPR pickup suggestions a few weeks back and is starting pay dividends. His since week 9…24 rec, 205 yds, & 4 TD’s….These are excellent WR2 numbers!

  • Odell Beckham Jr. took the world of social media by storm with his amazing one handed catch. The O’Dog is starting to show why he was heralded coming out of college and is starting to make the teams who passed on him second guessing. Over the last 4 weeks he has compiled a stat line of 41 rec, 503 yds, & 2 TD’s..This guy is for real!

  • Can we finally put the rest the notion of Trent Richardson ever being a number one option. The teams consistently floats the idea that T-Rich is their guy, but their actions never convey the same message. This week it was rookie RB Dan “Boom” Herron who took the lion share of the carries and actually looked like an established offensive player. He out carried T- Rich 17/13 and looks to offer a good RB2 potential for the rest of the year.

  • Coming into this year, this rookie WR class was being hyped as one, if not, the best ever. They sure have not disappointed. Over the last 3 weeks they have really turned it on as Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr., Jordan Matthews, Jarvis Landry, and Kelvin Benjamin all are in the Top 20.

Emmanuel Sanders has surpassed 100 yards in 7 of 11 games this year. He has been a fantasy STUD this year and well worth the 6th/7th rounds selection in the preseason drafts…..Justin Forsett looks like the second coming of MJD in his prime. Thank god for him Ray Rice is a wife beater….RGIII looks like he couldn’t beat out Ryan Leaf for a starting gig right now…..Matt Stafford still looks as lost as a blind man trying to cross an interstate when he plays a tough defense……Isaiah Crowell has shown why it was easy to let Ben Tate go. He shredded the Atlanta Falcons for 2 TD and showed he has more moves then a sober James Brown…Derek Carr is looking like he may actually be a relevant QB for the Raiders…….Josh Gordon is back and went from burning weed to burning defenders…..Tennessee is so bad right now, they look like they could get beat by a division III school….Does anyone notice that recycled coaches do not work, ala Lovie Smith…….The Cincinnati Bengals are 7-3-1 and are as entertaining as  a Barack Obama news conference……Demaryius Thomas catches TD’s like a Vegas prostitute catches an STD….Eddie Lacy continues to play at a higher level than his preseason predictions….John Brown is being compared to Marvin Harrison, Wow…..Don’t look now, but Seattle is starting to roll…Could we be seeing a New England vs. Seattle Super Bowl?

A Star in the Making…

boykin3

In a coaching era that had been mired in controversy, Andy Reid may have actually done something right when he drafted cornerback Brandon Boykin in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. During his tenure as Philadelphia Eagles head coach, he wasn’t known for his draft picks, but this one may be an exception.  Coming out of college, Boykin was an accomplished player who, as a senior, received the MVP award in the Outback Bowl and is the only player in Georgia Bulldog history to return three (3) kickoffs for touchdowns in a single season. All these accolades led him to be a projected late first/early second round pick. Unfortunately, Brandon fractured his leg in the senior bowl, making him unavailable to showcase his skills for the combine. This led to his slip down NFL teams’ draft boards, leaving him as a potential steal for the Eagles in the fourth round.

After critiquing his college career at Georgia, the knock on Boykin was his size (5’10) and weight (183lbs), two things that would prevent him from playing as an outside cornerback in the NFL. This is what his scouting report looked like:

  • Tackles poorly and rarely fights off blocks
  • Most likely never be more than an average nickel corner
  • Plays best in one on one coverage
  • May get bullied from time to time off the line because of lock of arm strengthboykin1
  • Stays in back pedal far too long on underneath routes
  • Plays fast and can cover deep ball well

Obviously, these are only preliminary views without the prospects of getting better. In this case, exceeding expectations is exactly what Boykin has been doing. He has probably been the Eagles best cornerback this year, showing fantastic cover skills and unique playmaking ability. The matchups are never easy in the NFC, but Brandon has been able to hold his own against the likes of Dez Bryant, Pierre Garcon, etc. He currently leads the team with four (4) interceptions and has shown the ability to be a top cover corner in this league.

In the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Billy Davis to be their defensive coordinator and put a new 3-4 Hybrid scheme in place. The boykin4team then decided to sign Cary Williams from the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens with the expectation of him being the focal point of the secondary.  As it turns out, Carey has been adequate, but Brandon has shown he is very capable of producing at that level or even higher, on the way to making the defense successful. There have been many great CB’s in Eagles history, Troy Vincent and Eric Allen, just to name a few. Consequently, Brandon Boykin has every opportunity to keep improving and maturing, working his way to becoming another polished member of a great Philadelphia cornerback tradition.
