Cam Newton Showed his Superpowers in 2015. Will he Conquer all or will Wade Phillips be his Kryptonite?

superman cam

Cam Newton has faced much criticism this year because of his confident attitude and creative antics on the field. He recently signed a huge contract extension that made him one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Deserved or not deserved was the question that made its way around the NFL and the sports world. We live in a world where we hate other people’s success and hope for their failure. This is evident in every sport and even stretches as far as Hollywood. So it shouldn’t come to anyone as a surprise for all the hate.

Last season, Carolina’s Cam Newton ranked just inside the top 10 of Pro Football Focus’s cumulative quarterback grades. Obviously he landed there in large part due to his rushing ability and ranked just No. 14 if you focused only on his passing performance alone. This season is a completely different story. He ranks No. 3 overall and for the first time in his career earned a higher grade as a passer than he did as a runner. He worked on his efficiency and accuracy harder than any other player in the league. He was always the guy who needed to put everything together to achieve his ultimate performance. This is something he worked tirelessly on and now it seems like it paid off.

The question remains, how did he go from the cusp of the Top 10 to one of the best in the NFL? He has always been criticized for his sketchy audible calls and inability to read a defense. Reading the eyes of the defense may be one of the hardest things to master as a QB. Newton appears to have the right diagnosis to extend the defense on every drive.  Last season, Newton produced a QB rating of 81.3 against the blitz and recorded an 8-6 TD-INT ratio. This year his QB rating versus the blitz has been an outstanding 118.7, while throwing for 21 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

This isn’t the only part of Newton’s game that has been overly criticized. One of the knocks on him throughout his career has been that he isn’t a pinpoint passer. Last year his completion percentage was 59-percent and this year he only rose to 61 percent. However, he has been more accurate on throws that travel 20 or more yards in the air to the tune of 48 percent. That ranks fourth in the NFL, and is a huge improvement over last year, when he was accurate on 32 percent of deep throws, which ranked fourth-lowest. Just another way he has grown as a passer.

Along with all these passing accomplishments, I would being doing him a disservice if I didn’t mention his running ability that for my money is tops in the NFL. Newton is having one of his best seasons ever running the ball. cam 2He leads all QBs in rushing grade this season, posting the second-highest mark of his career. He’s forced 10 missed tackles this season and continues to make linebackers look silly in their pursuit of bringing him down. Newton’s running ability makes him the most unique quarterback in the NFL, but it’s the improvement as a passer that has transformed him into one of the league’s top few quarterbacks.

The Denver Broncos defense has been one of the top units in the league and is anchored by defensive mastermind Wade Phillips. Phillips has had stints all over the NFL has a Head Coach and a defensive coordinator. He is known for his attacking style and unique schemes that leave the opposing Quarterback searching for answers. As if we didn’t need enough evidence, Tom Brady is still dusting himself off from the beating he took at the hands of Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware. Brady was held to an 18.1 QB rating in the first half and was knocked down a record 20 times. We all know how Tom Terrific doesn’t like to be hit or knocked down in a normal game, let alone in the AFC Championship game. I’m guessing the Rolex watches won’t be appearing on his offensive line’s wrist this year.

The Broncos will certainly give Superman Cam a test like no other. He has been playing on a level no one could have ever imagined. It is a testament to the coaches and his dedication to the game he loves. We’ll see if those improvements are enough to get him a Super Bowl win Feb. 7 against the best defense in the NFL.

NFL Championship Weekend…Road to Arizona Continues

champs

The stage is set and ready for Prime Time. The road to the Superbowl continues on Sunday when arguably 4 of the Top 5 quarterbacks will be on display for the entire world to watch. Last weekend we seen an underdog in the Ravens squander a game away and possibly a true legend of the game in Manning take his last NFL snap. Superman was alive for one-quarter, but an evil enemy named Chancellor proved to be too strong for his punch. Lastly, we seen America’s team lose by a bobble and a courageous athlete lead his Pack to victory who could barely even give a discount double-check to his opposition. I am sure this weekend will leave a lasting impression on us all and prove to be just as entertaining.

Packers at Seahawks

One week after a gutsy performance by Aaron Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers travel to Seattle to take on the Seattle Seahawks and the Legion of Boom. We all know about the calf, but despite the injury, Rodgers completed 24 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns against Dallas. The running game proved to be efficient enough to keep some pressure of the QB with Eddie Lacy running for over 100 yards on 19 carries. It was also nice to see the other receivers not named Jordy (Cobb and Adams) step up and eclipse the 100 yard receiving mark.

The Seahawks meanwhile were exactly who we thought they were in a 31-17 defeat of the Carolina Panthers. Russell Wilson delighted fans all over the football world as he showed why he is one of the most electric and top QB’s in the league as he passed for three touchdowns on 15 completions. The Legion of Boom did their job as they pressured Cam Newton all game forcing him into two interceptions and erratic throws most of the day. Seattle sits at 7-1 at home including a 36-16 victory over the Packers in Week 1 and has been playing at level that may be even higher than that of last year. Look for the Seahawks to throw the heavy blitz book at Rogers forcing him to put pressure on the calf trying to be the mobile QB he can be when healthy. Green Bay is a formidable opponent, but under these circumstances I think they will come up short.

Prediction: Packers 17, Seahawks 23

Colts at Patriots

The Ravens came out throwing knockout punches from the gate, but didn’t have the stamina to preserve a win. Bill Belichick put the game into the hands of his HOF Quarterback in the 2nd Half and the rest is history.  This week the Patriots welcome Andrew Luck and the Colts into their house of Gold, as they square off into a battle for supremacy in the AFC. The Patriots have won the last five meetings between these teams by an average of 18 points. The Patriots ran all over the Colts back in Week 11 in Indianapolis. I am sure everyone remembers the Jonas Grey game that haunted fantasy players all around the world. Look for Tom Brady to continue to use his offensive vision and mighty arm to wear down the Indianapolis defense and open up the field.

On the flipside, Andrew Luck leads the league’s top ranked pass attack in the regular season into Gillette in the hopes of earning a trip to the big dance. The Colts have been slowly trying to bring their run game back from the depths of the unknown with the emergence of Dan Herron. Herron took over for an overvalued T-Rich and has proved to be a spark. He has an incredible 18 catches so far this post-season which gives this offense yet another weapon in the passing game for the Patriots to defend against. Indianapolis will look downfield to TY Hilton whenever they can and should find some opportunities if the taller Browner is lined up opposite against the smaller quicker Hilton.

I think this is the game out of the 2 that has a chance to keep us guessing. These are two exciting teams and should put up a decent amount of points. Chuck Pagano has really proved himself to be an incredible gameday coach and doesn’t get anywhere near the respect he deserves. I see this game being decided late with only a touchdown as separation. Both teams will go to their air attacks early and often. Despite the Colts improved defense and the Patriots strong secondary, I think this game will have so many highlights they may need to add another 5 minute segment on Sportscenter to be able to see them all.

Prediction: Colts 31, Patriots 38
