Can the Eagles Survive an Offseason of Change?

heatratiocrop

When you are a Champion, everyone comes running for a shot at success. Frank Reich and John DeFilippo are gone. What is the fallout? Who gets first crack at OC? Are you sold on Ronald Darby? Do you trade Nick Foles?

Clinton Portis, Shaun Alexander, and Edgerrin James are just a few backs that took a beating in their prime before the age of 30. Where does that put Le’Veon Bell?  Also, as we transition into Fantasy Baseball talk, we take a look at the Top 10 from the overall 300. Who scares you and gets you excited?

The Heat Ratio (@theheatratio) brings unique views and opinions to the forefront as we focus on all the top sports stories from the past week. Listen in as Tony (@TCutillo23) says he would trade Nick Foles and RB’s in the NFL only have a 5 year lifespan, while John (@PGHJohn36) says that’s not necessarily true and you have to wait on the word that Carson is healthy before you pull the trigger. From a Fantasy Baseball debate to the return of Johnny Football, it’s all here just waiting for your take….

Sum of All Sports Report: NFL Free Agency Lift Off

NFL free agency is upon us and there are already numerous stories that are trending worldwide. Trades are still being talked about, releases are in the early stages, and contracts are being written all ahead of the Thursday unveiling. Who will go where and for how much is all that is left to sort out. Whether it be the Twitter GM’s, the passionate fans or the credible reporters, this continues to be one of the most exciting phases of the NFL offseason!

Fantasy Sports Expert and Real Sports Insider Tony Cutillo uses his expertise to answer the questions of who goes where and why. He offers his unique insight and opinion on what these moves all mean. Along with Free Agency, he gives us a wide variety of topics that will keep all the Fantasy Sports, Real Sports and Sports Entertainment Fans sparking up a debate.

 * NFL Free Agency….The legal tampering period is upon us and contracts will be signed in a few days. With all the players available, who do you think will sign the most surprising deal or offer the best story?

My money is on Adrian Peterson. At 32 years old and coming off an injury plagued year once again, he is already finding out the market isn’t what he expected. He will sign somewhere, but not for the money he was originally thought to receive.

* March Madness….Selection Sunday is coming up and championship week is in full swing. The NCAA tournament is the best contest in sports. From its unpredictability to its last second finishes, it reigns supreme in the world of sports.  While teams like Florida Gulf Coast and Iona are already in, who will be left on the bubble hoping for a miracle? Who is getting the (4) #1 seeds?

* FantasyBaseball….For those of you watching the Spring Training action have already noticed that Clayton Kershaw has been locked in. It’s not like he needed to give owners more of a reason why he should be the top pitcher selected, but he has decided to imprint it into their heads. He has only allowed 1 base runner this spring and still hasn’t given up a hit. Any questions? Do you take him #1?

* NBA…..Dirk Nowitzki adamantly silenced all the critics who labeled him as a jump shooter that avoids contact this week by becoming only the 6th player in NBA history to accumulate 30,000 points. After this achievement, his Mavs teammates and owner Mark Cuban mobbed him during a timeout. Is there any better owner in sports?

Kudos to Dirk for continuing to play stellar basketball for the better part of 19 seasons all with the same franchise.  In the days of the spoiled athlete and overpaid contracts, for a player to stay with one franchise for his entire career speaks volumes to the sacrifices made along the way.  Will this be his last year? Where does he fall on the all time list?

* WWE…The Undertaker has returned and looks to build on his match against Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 33. This was a scenario we all seen coming, especially with the way Roman kept eluding to the ring as his yard. We all know that is Taker’s line and it was just a matter of time before he appeared to take it back. With his documented hip issue, can the Undertaker still carry a match? Will this be his last WrestleMania? Now that the streak is over, does he offer the same appeal?

Insider Trading Takes Center Stage in Fantasy Sports

draftkings

The sports world is buzzing around the term fantasy sports. There are upwards of 57 million people who play fantasy sports with average age being 37. Daily fantasy sports leagues have never been more popular and have seen a 9% increase in play over the last year.  How does the world of Fantasy sports work you ask. The way it works is simple: sports lovers select a team of real world athletes who then score fantasy points according to set scoring rules. There are the traditional fantasy leagues for which you keep the same team and score points for 16 weeks or there are the DFS leagues where you play on a weekly basis. The standard fantasy game has been around a long time, but the new hype is centered around the weekly leagues, FanDuel and DraftKings.

Once involved in any of these leagues there are many questions that need to be asked. What players do we start? Who’s active? Who’s below market value? What players are picked the most? What players are picked the least? Obviously we know now, that if we want the answers to these questions all we have to do is ask a DraftKings or FanDuel employee.

The news broke through the media last week of a fantasy football scandal and it continues to grow legs faster than a baby spider. As in all scandals, where there is smoke, there’s usually fire. And in this case we are talking about a forest fire that refuses to die.

Last week as everyone was getting ready to look at the recaps from the weekend’s games, a story broke that a DraftKings employee used insider information to win a sum of $350,000 on their rival site Fanduel. This has caused many questions in the direction of a league that already was facing opposition from legislators and officials. Is this legalized gambling they ask? How does it not fall in line with casino winnings or sports betting?

All signs continue to point to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA), which was signed into law by George W. Bush. This act included an explicit provision noting that the law would not apply to fantasy sports games, educational games, or any online contest that “has an outcome that reflects the relative knowledge of the participants, or their skill at physical reaction or physical manipulation (but not chance), and, in the case of a fantasy or simulation sports game, has an outcome that is determined predominantly by accumulated statistical results of sporting events, including any single score, point-spread, team performance, or individual performance in such sporting events.”

Since its inception, the argument for fantasy sports has been skill vs. luck.  Statistics show that the players who do the most research win at a higher percentage.  So from afar it seems as though the studying helps. However, people do study slot machine tendencies and poker strategies as well. Doesn’t that count as skill?

The thinking is that skilled players make profit by selecting high-risk, high-reward players that could catapult owners to a greater payout. This means taking a chance on a player like Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman, who was a virtual unknown at a low price, rather than piling up a roster of players that casual fans are likely to choose, like Matt Forte or Jamal Charles at the same position, who put out consistent performances week to week.

In doing some research I came across a report from the Gaming Laboratories International shared with FORBES, that states Star Fantasy League’s “skilled’ fantasy football players (meaning, those who performed the best over the previous week) purportedly beat randomly generated lineups that used ninety percent or more of the provided salary cap space 69.10% of the time, with a +/- 0.69% variability over a 95 percent confidence interval. This is one of the first studies I have seen that backs the skilled players win argument.

Regardless of either train of thought, there is a real problem here that needs some solid answers. The implications can run deep as the investigations pile up. As I look deeper into these 2 monster fantasy sites, the following tidbits of information make me really question the legitimacy of these games, as well as the overall direction.

* 28 out of 32 teams have signed deals with one of the 2 major DFS sites: FanDuel signed 16 clubs while rival DraftKings partnered with a dozen

* DFS sites a linked to advertising on stadium signs and team websites, which goes above and beyond the traditional advertising the teams try to sell us on.

* Browns president Alec Scheiner talked about FanDuel in the same breath as Ford and Pepsi.

* At last count, there are six fantasy lounges that have been installed in NFL stadiums, three sponsored by each site. The deal for the DraftKings lounge at the New England Patriots’ stadium involved the team’s vice president of corporate sponsorship sales.

* Fanduel and DraftKings will spend $500 million in advertising, with $150 million spent in the 3rd quarter alone.

* Daily games will generate around $2.6 billion in entry fees this year and grow 41 percent annually, reaching $14.4 billion in 2020

* Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Robert K. Kraft of the New England Patriots have stakes in DraftKings, which recently struck a three-year deal with the N.F.L. to become a partner of the league’s International Series in Britain, where sports betting is legal.

* DraftKings has tapped hundreds of millions of dollars from Fox Sports, and FanDuel has raised similar amounts from investors like Comcast, NBC and KKR.

This list of unknown partnerships will only continue to grow, but at the same time shows how big these site really are. What we know right now for sure is that FanDuel and DraftKings are being investigated by the New York Attorney General after claims that their employees could gain an inside edge on the competition. These allegations have prompted these two sites to ban their employees from playing the game on any rival sites or venues. However, all the things we know begs us to ask the question, “How far will these charges go?” Will they trickle all the way down to the owners and sponsors? Also, since so many NFL teams have a vested interest, is there any way that plays into the integrity of the game? These are the questions that will continue to be asked in game that started out as a friendly office contest among friends and quickly turned into a high stakes game that is emptying bank accounts. Should it all be regulated? The answers will be coming soon…………

Thoughts and theories from Week 3…..

  • Aaron Rodgers continues to write his path to Canton. He now has four career five-touchdown games, the most in franchise history and one ahead of Brett Favre. On top of that, he’s thrown 580 passes in a row at Lambeau Field without getting intercepted. Rodgers also joins Peyton Manning as only the second quarterback to throw 10 touchdowns in his first three games without allowing an interception.
  • Who wants to win the AFC South? With all teams holding onto a losing record, it seems that no one really wants to win. The battle between the Titans and the Colts was sorted out in the last 5 minutes of the game. Someone has to win and I still think Andrew Luck is the X Factor will sail the Colts to the top.
  • The injuries in week 3 have continued to mount. This time it was Big Ben. It seems as though he escaped a more severe injury, but he still will miss half the season. Can Michael Vick work his magic?

Peyton Manning threw for his first 300 yd game of the season. Is this just the beginning?…Chris Ivory was declared Active but did not receive a single carry…..Lesean McCoy spent more time on the exercise bike than on the filed. Thank God for his TD….Steve Smith Sr. showed he must of been blessed b the Pope because he went back in time to 2009…..Latavius Murray finally showed promise in a breakout game this weekend. Maybe the black hole isn’t so black anymore….Is there a RB controversy brewing in Philly? Ryan Matthews made Demarco Murray look like a granny on wheels…Now onto Week 4.

Fantasy Sports Addiction’s Week 2 Fantasy Fallout

Week 2 Fantasy Football Recap

Standout Stars and Substandard Stiffs

Stars

QB

  • Brady…466 yds 3 TD
  • Roethlisberger……369 yds 3 TD
  • C. Palmer……351 yds 3 TD/ 1 INT

RB

  • D. Williams….77 yds, 3 TD….4 rec, 15 yds
  • M. Jones……..123 yds, 2 TD….3 rec, 23 yds
  • D. Lewis…..40 yds, 1 TD…6 rec, 89 yds

WR/TE

  • Fitzgerald…..8 rec, 112 yds, 3 TD
  • A. Robinson.…..6 rec, 155 yds 2 TD
  • A. Brown…..9 rec, 195 yds, 1 TD

Stiffs

QB

  • Smith…..191 yds, 2 INT’s
  • Bradford….. 224 yds, 1 TD/ 2 INT
  • Luck….250 yds, 1 TD/ 3 INT

RB

  • CJ Anderson…..27 yds…..1 rec 2 yds
  • L. Miller……14 yds…5 rec, 28 yds
  • Hyde…..43 yds….4 rec, 18 yds

WR/TE

  • A. Johnson…..3 rec 27 yds
  • D. Adams…..5 rec, 33 yds
  • M. Wallace……3 rec, 38 yds

Thoughts and theories from Week 2…..

  • The New York Jets are for real!. Coming into this year alot people were wondering how new HC Todd Bowles would make it in a city with big expectations. Bowles is known for his defensive schemes and showed why last night against Andrew Luck. They forced the Pro Bowler into 3 INTS and gave him little time to execute. The Jets are 2-0 and the playoffs do not seem like a mirage in 2015.
  • Don’t look now, but Johnny Football may be ready to take center stage. He engineered a week 2 win against the against the Titans by executing a great gameplan by Coach Pettine. Manziel attempted only 15 passes and used the speed of Travis Benjamin to burn the titan defenders for 2 Touchdowns. If the gameplan is run oriented and watered down, Manziel just might be able to succeed in this league.
  • What is going on with the Philadelphia Eagles? In an off-season full of shrewd moves and questionable trades, Chip Kelly has led his team to an embarrassing first 2 weeks. Sam Bradford looks confused and hesitant. Byron Maxwell looks like a bust. The offensive line couldn’t open up holes for Bo Jackson. Too many questions and too much to fix. Is the the Dream Team Part 2?
  • The injuries in week 2 have continued to mount. Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, Tevon Coleman, Drew Brees, Eddie Lacy, Kiko Alonso, and Luke Kuechly. These are some of the most notable injuries suffered in week 2. This is going to be a long fantasy year, so hopefully your bench is deep.

Tyler Eifert continued to show he is a force for the Bengals as long as he can stay healthy….Antonio Brown showed us why he is the best receiver in fantasy football…..Odell Beckham Jr. came out to show week 1 was a fluke….Andrew Luck has performed more like Jay Cutler. This can’t be true, can it?….After watching Drew Brees over the first 2 weeks, I hate to say it, but I think he is on the way down….Carson Palmer has shown that his body is made of steel and he can still outperform the top Quarterbacks in this league…..Matt Jones showed why he was drafted with big promise. Alfred Morris needs to hitch a ride on the Jones Train…..Is Travis Benjamin this years Allen Hurns or Josh Gordon? Pick him up now…Tom Brady! Enough said!……Now onto Week 3.

Has the Shake-up in the Divas Division Really Been a Revolution?

divas rev

Has the state of the Divas division really changed? Is there a new direction or are they just taking a detour? Your guess is as good as mine. The only thing we know for certain is they are trying to push this division hard behind the mind of Stephanie McMahon; not to mention the constant mentions of Ronda Rousey to create a buzz in the hopes of bringing in more ratings.

Stephanie McMahon sent revolutionary shockwaves throughout the WWE Universe on Raw with the introductions of three new Divas from NXT: Becky Lynch, Charlotte and NXT Women’s Champion Sasha Banks. After months of Team Bella dominance, how have these new arrivals affected the landscape of the Divas division?

Aside from the predictable tag matches or team interference, it has been nice to see a chance going forward. The only thing that puzzles me is the stagnant crowd reaction and the lackluster action inside the ring. With the exception of Paige and Nikki Bella, these divas are well off when it comes to in ring ability. For those that have followed me on here, you already know I am an advocate for Nikki Bella. I think she has worked hard on her ability and it is showing inside the ring. Natalya is a mystery, Naomi is the second coming of Jacqueline, Alicia Fox has been a disappointment, and Tamina can’t stay healthy. I know the younger generation is here to jump-start the division, but I still think they have a long way to go.

In reality, one of the main reasons why the Divas were so popular in the earlier years was because of the uncensored stunts from week to week. In a PG syndicated show all of the excitement is non-existent. It leads us to wonder if the Diva Division will ever succeed as a Wrestling Division instead of pure eye-candy inside the squared circle.

Nonetheless, all of this month’s creativity will lead nine ladies to a match at SummerSlam. The 4 hour PPV will include the Divas champ Nikki Bella and her “Army” of sister Brie & Alicia Fox battle the recently re-christened PCB of Paige, Charlotte & Becky Lynch and Team B.A.D. of Sasha Banks,Naomi & Tamina. The trios will face off in a team elimination match to determine the winner of a month long battle.

Booking it this way also means that at the least NXT Women’s champ Banks will work double-duty on the weekend, as she’s scheduled to defend that title on Saturday at TakeOver. It also means Nikki inches closer to the longest Divas title reign of all-time, since the team warfare has taken the focus off of her defending the belt. It was reported months ago that creative had chosen her to break the record held by AJ Lee and after SummerSlam she will be well on her way.

Is this what we all had in mind when Lynch, Charlotte and The Boss stormed Raw last month? Do you think they can survive on the top roster? Will this just be another failed experiment for the Divas division? There are many questions to be answered and it will take more than a month to get the proper explanations. Until then everything remains up in the air.
